Deer

In the Song of Songs, King Solomon describes the powerful love between a person and their creation, and this song also offers numerous expressions of love and mutuality between the two.  The Holy One Blessed be He uses these verses to draw the comparison with a deer or a fawn, and here in this painting, I’ve created my figure standing facing the deer and between them, the flow of water.  Water alludes to Torah, which descends towards us from above exactly like water, as it is written in the Song of Songs, “Many waters cannot quench the love, nor can rivers flood it.”  Additionally, the water from heaven is for purity, which is one of the three mitzvot incumbent upon women; it is no coincidence that my garments have been painted in white, which symbolizes purity.
