Song of Grass

This painting, “Song of Grass,” I created when I was first beginning my journey back to religious observance, after a unique experience while I was out in a field alone among the grass, reading passages from Psalms, when I suddenly felt like my heart had opened and my soul was being elevated, while my body swayed from side to side like the grass of the field, and the beat of the tune of the Tehillim (Psalms) emerged from my mouth, and it had already become a song.  I observed that my body was swaying exactly according to the movement of the grass, moving with the wind, and I experienced a powerful feeling of connectedness to nature and the unity of all things. A short time later, I encountered the Torah of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, who spoke about prayer in the field and the power of grass to elevate his prayers, and I rejoiced to discover that this was the exact thing I’d experienced even before I knew about it. This painting expresses the prayer of a person to become like the grass of the field, “And from the singing of the grass is made the song of the heart …” (Rabbi Nachman).
